America Is Building Bill Gates's Next-Gen Reactor. A Korean Company Is Making the Part That Holds It Together.


There's a version of the American nuclear-revival story that gets told a lot right now — small modular reactors, Bill Gates, sodium cooling, the grid of the future. Here's the part that version usually leaves out: some of the most safety-critical hardware for that future is going to be built in Korea.

On August 14, 2026, Doosan Enerbility won a contract to supply core components for TerraPower's Natrium reactor — the one under construction in Kemmerer, Wyoming. TerraPower is the nuclear company Bill Gates founded. This is Doosan's first order for core equipment from them, which is the kind of "first" that tends to lead to a second and a third.

What Doosan is actually making isn't the glamorous part. It's the guard vessel — the outer shell that contains the reactor if anything ever leaks — plus the structures that hold the reactor up and hold it together. Nobody puts that on a magazine cover. But it's the hardware everything else is standing on. Manufacturing starts in 2027.

Why this reactor is interesting is worth a second. Natrium isn't a water-cooled reactor like the ones you picture. It's cooled by liquid sodium, and it's bolted to a molten-salt energy-storage system, which means it can jump its output from 345 to 500 megawatts on demand. In a grid full of solar and wind that surge and sag, a reactor that can lean in when you need it is exactly the thing utilities are chasing. It has its NRC construction permit and a 2030 target.

And why Korea is the whole point. The U.S. essentially stopped building reactors after Three Mile Island in 1979, and a country that stops building things stops being able to build them. Korea didn't stop. Doosan is one of a small handful of companies on earth that has actually fabricated large reactor components in recent memory. So when America went looking for someone to make these parts precisely, the hands were in Korea. That's not a footnote about exports. It means Korean manufacturing has quietly become a linchpin of the American nuclear comeback — remove it and the schedule doesn't just slip, it stalls.

The honest caveat: next-gen reactors have no commercial track record yet, Natrium isn't done until 2030, and plenty of people think these timelines are optimistic. Fair. But the risk cuts the other way too — the country taking that bet picked a Korean company to help carry it.
