The week ahead in New York — hot start, wet middle, dry finish.
Same disclaimer as always: I'm not a meteorologist and this isn't a weather channel. This is a New York weather report from someone who lives here and checks the forecast every morning for the same reason you're probably reading this — what to wear, and whether the umbrella is coming along.
The week at a glance: Monday is the hottest day, mid-80s and sunny. Then it turns — Tuesday and Wednesday are the wet ones, with Wednesday looking like the heaviest of the two. Thursday clears up but stays grey around the edges. Friday is the nicest day of the week: dry, sunny, mid-80s.
What to actually do with that
Monday. The outdoor day. It's also the warmest, so if you're doing anything with real midday sun — Central Park, the High Line, a walk over the Brooklyn Bridge — go before noon or after four. Sunscreen and water, not optional.
Tuesday–Wednesday. Umbrella in the bag, not by the door. This is the stretch to move your museum day into. If you're visiting and had one indoor thing on the list for "sometime this week," this is that day. Shoes you don't mind soaking — New York crosswalks pool at the corners and there is no graceful way around it.
Thursday. In-between day. Mostly dry, still overcast. Fine for walking around, not the day for a picnic you've been looking forward to.
Friday. Best day of the week. If you get to pick one day for the outdoor plan, pick this one.
🏞️ Spending the weekend in the Hudson Valley?
With rain sitting in the middle of this week, it's a good stretch for the indoor half of the valley — wineries and breweries, the galleries in Beacon, the covered market spaces. Those hold up in weather that would ruin a hike.
And a practical note if you've been assuming you need a car: you don't, for a lot of it. Metro-North's Hudson Line runs straight up from Grand Central along the river to walkable towns like Cold Spring, Beacon, and Poughkeepsie — roughly 1.5 to 2 hours, trains about hourly, and the ride itself is one of the better views in the state.
I'm back every Monday with the week ahead. Subscribe if this is useful.
What's the weather thing that catches you off guard most in New York — the humidity, the sudden downpours, or how much colder it gets at night than you expected? Leave a comment.
