Quick disclaimer before we start: I'm not a meteorologist and this isn't a weather channel. This is just a New York weather report from someone who actually lives here — in the city most weeks, up in the Hudson Valley on others — and who checks the forecast every morning for the same reason you might be reading this: to figure out what to wear and whether the umbrella's coming with me.
This is the first week of a new Monday series. Every week, I'll lay out what the next seven days look like for both NYC and the Hudson Valley, plus the practical stuff — what to wear, when to carry an umbrella, whether it's a picnic day or an indoor day.
The week at a glance: Monday through Wednesday are the pick of the week — mostly sunny, low-to-mid 80s in the city, noticeably cooler once the sun goes down if you're up in the Hudson Valley. Thursday is the one day to watch, with afternoon showers possible in both spots. Friday through Sunday swing back to sunny and warm, climbing into the mid-80s by Sunday.
What to actually do with that:
Monday–Wednesday: Good outdoor days. Light layers — the mornings are mild, afternoons get warm fast. Sunscreen, no question, especially Wednesday when it's sunny start to finish.
Thursday: Keep an umbrella in your bag, not just by the door. The rain is expected after 2pm, so mornings should be fine — but I'd build in an indoor backup for the afternoon if you're out sightseeing.
Friday–Sunday: Back to sun. Sunday's the warmest day of the week, so if you're planning anything outdoors with real midday exposure — Central Park, a walk across a bridge, a farmers market — go early or go late, and bring water.
🏞️ Spending the weekend in the Hudson Valley?
A lot of people do the full weekend up there rather than a day trip, and the one thing every trip guide agrees on: pack a layer regardless of the forecast — the weather shifts more by exact location (river town vs. up in the hills) than people expect coming from the city grid. With a sunny stretch like this week's, it's a good one for swimming holes and farm stands over anything indoors.
I'll be back every Monday with the week ahead. Subscribe if this is useful, and let me know in the comments what you'd want to see built into this series — hiking-specific notes for Hudson Valley trails, better tie-ins with weekend plans, whatever's actually useful to you.
